The Skibness Triplets

Introducing Our Beautiful Daughters
Following an emergency c-section, we welcomed our three beautiful, identical baby girls into this world.

Cecilia Hope Skibness

Formally known as Runt, Cecilia was delivered at 1:56 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013.  Cecilia weighed 530 grams at birth or 1 pound 2 ounces.

Isabelle Grace Skibness

Formally known as Baby B, was delivered at 1:58 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013.  Isabelle weighed 690 grams or 1 pound 8 ounces (1.5 pounds).

Zoe Elizabeth Skibness

Formally known as Baby C, was delivered at 2:01 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013.  Zoe weighed 630 grams or 1 pound 6 ounces.

Additional Information:

The girls are defined as "micro preemies" for both their birth age and weight.  By definition a baby born either before 26 weeks or weighing less than 1200 grams is considered a micro preemie.  The girls were delivered at a gestational age of 24 weeks, 5 days.

The girls were immediately given to multiple neonatology teams and rushed over to St. Mary's for immediately treatment.  It is my understanding that before ventilator tubes were placed they all make little noises, however we were in separate rooms.  The girls are fighters and we are praying for them every minute.

Unfortunately I was not able to meet my daughters until Tuesday, July 2, but Adam was able to go over and see them on Monday night.  My parents and Adam's mom arrived Monday night and were also able to meet the girls.  Adam's dad arrived Tuesday.

Our girls are simply beautiful, incredibly small but beautiful.  Please continue to hold them in your prayers as they have a very long road ahead of them.

With all our Love,

Adam & daneille

Ready or Not...

The Girls Have Arrived.

Well despite my best efforts, the girls have arrived early.

Sunday, June 30, 2013

Today has been pretty uneventful.  I am completely off the Magnesium drip, so basically I am human again.  We sent Mom home today so she could relax a little and help with Chunky Monkey (my nephew Jaxon).  Belle went home on Saturday night.  So it is just Adam and I  and we are trying to relax and breathe.  We were told that tomorrow there was a strong possibility I would be moved back to Anti-Partum.

Monday, July 1, 2013

Well this morning (aka 1 a.m.) was different.  I had been taking a sleeping aide and sleeping from approximately 10:30/11 p.m. until 4 a.m.  However, tonight I was up at 1 a.m. and then 3 a.m. and then again at 4:30 a.m. to use the bathroom.  At the 4:30 a.m. wake up I thought was dreaming I was having contractions.

Since the nurses are required to assist me back into bed (I have these leg stockings to prevent a blood clot), I told the nurse I was feeling funny.  I told her everything and she called the doctors right away.

Needless to say this was the end of sleeping for Adam.  Dr. Erik arrived and stated he needed to do an exam, which really did not go well.  After his second attempt he stated that I was now dilated to 3 cm and the babies needed monitored right away.

At 6 a.m. the anesthesiologists were called in to discuss an epidural.  I told the doctors before that if at all possible I wanted to be awake for delivery.  As the doctors could not state how quickly things might progress they wanted to discuss placement of the epidural well before hand.  I would not be getting any medicine but the line would be there in case they needed it in an emergency.  This would allow me to stay awake during delivery if the girls decided to come quickly.

I was still under the naive impression that I could fend off delivery at this point.
All morning I was monitored and having contractions.  The funny thing is my contractions were not horrible.  More annoying than anything.  I did not request medicine and I was able to breathe through them all, with Adam by my side.

At about 1:30 p.m. I was having a hard time staying on my back.  I would get more contractions on my back then on my side.  Unfortunately, the nurse was having a hard time locating Runt's heart beat so before I could stay on my side we needed to talk to the doctors.

Dr. Todd showed up and did another ultrasound but did not like what he saw.  Runt appeared to be hiding behind my pubic bone now, even lower than before.  Dr. Todd had to do another exam (two unfortunately). When he finished he second exam he got very serious, looked at Adam and I and said "I'm sorry but it's time."

Next there was a flurry of activity as I was rushed into an emergency c-section because unbeknownst to me I had dilated to 10 cm and Runt was sliding down getting ready to make her appearance.  I was upset as we were still way to early but there was nothing more than could be done...the girls were coming.

Time Flies...

Background Information

Again I apologize for the delay, but as you know, if there is a delay it means I have been unable to get to a computer.  Let me fill you in on some of the details...

Adam has to leave tonight so my mom is making the trip to Rochester to stay with me.  I am very grateful for this ~ as much as I state I am fine, it is extremely comforting to have someone who loves me with me while we try to stretch out our hospital stay.  The girls have a gestational age of 23 weeks, 4 days today ~ way too early for them to arrive.  Wednesday will be a huge milestone (reaching 24 weeks)!

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Today the girls had a doppler ultrasound to review their heartbeats and check for flow through the umbilical cords.  With Runt being as small as she is, it is important to track the flow from through the umbilical cord to ensure she is (A) receiving enough nutrients and (B) still in there.

The doppler showed reduced flow to Runt, basically justifying her smaller size.  Right now this is not a huge cause for concern, but rather something that will be monitored for progress throughout the remainder of my pregnancy.

HUGE DAY TODAY!!  The babies have reached 24 weeks, 0 days!  Developmentally this is huge!  The chances of the babies survival is vastly improved by keeping them in utero for the past week.

In fact some of the neonatalogists had told us that if I did not make it to 24 weeks there was virtually nothing they could do for our girls.  It was a fight to have them state they would treat each girl as an individual as opposed to viewing them as a dismal statistic.  I am fighting for my girls and I will not let anyone give up on them.

Ps.  They are cantelopes today!

Thursday, June 27, 2013 ~ Morning

Today we had a growth/sizing ultrasound for the girls.  Runt really needs to gain some weight.  When I was admitted last week she was only measuring 360 grams.  We have been told over and over again the doctors need to her be at 500 grams for them to be able to help her.  Some doctors will jump in at 400 grams, but all prefer 500 grams.  Basically, she would be too small otherwise for even their equipment to assist her.

Dr. Baldwin (the fabulous fellow who is working our case) told me that she is hoping for 400 grams today and she would be thrilled.  I, of course, want 500 grams, but I was told this was overly ambitious.

Results...Runt is measuring at 419 grams.  Not quite the 500 I was hoping for, but definitely over the 400 Dr. Baldwin wanted.  This is fabulous news.

Baby B weighed in at 599 grams while Baby C weighed at 619 grams.

All babies looked great and I think we're doing well.

Thursday, June 27, 2013 ~ Night time

All is NOT quiet on the western front.  Despite having a good day, I could maintain the status quo.  My water broke.

The water for Baby A broke and there was no gush of water or fluid like they warn.  I simply got up to use the bathroom and noticed I was wetter than normal.  I called in Nurse Jacqui who quickly called Dr. Todd (Stanhope) to check me.  Dr. Todd was there in less than two minutes.

Background - Dr. Todd is the soon-to-be (midnight tomorrow) Chief Resident.  Great guy who has been called in every night to ultrasound the girls to check for location (the girls like to cuddle on top of one another at night).  We like Dr. Todd.

Dr. Todd arrives and is not happy with what he sees.  He does an examine to confirm that yes my water has broke.  When I asked if I needed Adam he looked at me and said yes, he would call him.  So Mom did ~ at 10:20/30 p.m. to inform him that my water was broke and they were once again moving to Labor & Delivery.

This started a long road ahead of us...But first, did you know that when babies have their own sacs, the mom will have three separate (in my case) bags of water that can break.  I only broke the water for Runt.

Also did you know that, typically, when the water breaks a mom will deliver within the next 30 hours...Thankfully I did not.  The doctors were able to prevent labor from progressing/occurring with Magnesium, fluids and other medicines.

Adam arrived by my side at 12:30 a.m. and did not leave it again.

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Dr. Todd became the Chief Resident at midnight - I congratulated him and he wished me a Happy Birthday. As a present, he allowed the nurses to take me off of continuous monitoring to get a little sleep.  HUGE as due to the monitoring I was required to lay on my back, which for those of you who don't know, this is incredibly uncomfortable for a pregnant person and I had been in that position for over 48 hours.

Happy Birthday to me in Labor & Delivery trying to keep my girls inside.

Checking In...

Hotel Mayo - Rochester

Hello friends!  We apologize for the delay in updates but we've had an eventful past week which ultimately delayed our posts.  Please bear with me as this post will be longer than most.

First and foremost, the babies and I are ok.  That being said I am going to take you back to last week...

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

We made it to 23 weeks ~ Adam and I were so excited yet at the same time we were filled with apprehension.  This is the bubble zone.  We lost Madison sometime between 21-23 weeks and found out at 24 weeks, so as much as we try not to compare the pregnancies out of fear, the apprehension was inevitable.

Size-wise the babies were to be the size of GRAPEFRUITS!!  This was humorous to us as every week Adam would guess grapefruits and they finally made it.  Growthwise the singleton baby site did not provide any new numbers.  The growth was simply for babies in their fifth month ~ so all we could do was hope the babies were still eating and growing.

Wednesday was a happy day.  I was able to splurge a little and my friend Andrea and I went for pedicures.  We made sure the pedicure place knew I was not ready to go into labor so they really did not even rub my feet.  However, I did get pretty new toes ~ a bright pink with a glitter overlay (trust me, it's not guady).  It was a great time and we laughed so hard.

The pedicure was necessary as I was gearing up for the baby shower for the girls.  My mom and sister had planned a Baby Shower for Saturday, June 22, 2013 ~ This was supposed to be the last weekend I had free travel before my restrictions (staying within two hours of the hospital) was to set in.  I was beyond excited!!

Thursday, June 20, 2013

I woke up Thursday and it was just a normal day.  I had some extra discharge starting Wednesday night and told Adam about it.  Truthfully it was nothing to worry about ~ all pregnant women have discharge.  Adam however being the wonderfully protective husband he is, asked me to call and confirm that it really was nothing.

I didn't call right away.  And to be honest, I wasn't going to call but I didn't want to lie to Adam or get nagged all weekend for not calling.  So I called Dr. Borowski's office (Rochester Specialist) at about 11 a.m. and spoke with Chris, our nurse.  Chris agreed it probably was nothing but wanted to check with the MFM (Maternal Fetal Medicine) Specialist on-call (Dr. Borowski was out).  Chris called back within ten minutes stating that while it was probably nothing, the Dr. wanted it checked.  There was no hesitation on this and I was told to call Eau Claire and make them see me.

So I agreed and called Eau Claire, who at first acted like I was being paranoid (remember discharge is normal).  However, Dr. Weber, our doctor, told them that not only did he want to see me to confirm that I was not leaking amniotic fluid, but he also wanted a cervical ultrasound!

My appointment time was scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

I was supposed to have a hearing at 3:10 p.m. that day, however I did not know if I would have enough time to make it to the doctor back to work and then back to Court.  So much to my dismay, I asked a partner to cover my hearing.  (I was frustrated!!).

Adam is wonderful and does not want to miss a single appointment; thankfully Scheels has been very accommodating to our appointment schedule.  I picked Adam up from work and we made our way down to see Dr. Weber.

1:30 p.m.

We are checked in and they start with the test for amniotic fluid.  Next we have the ultrasound.  Unfortunately we have one of the newest ultrasound technicans who really does not know what she is doing.  She was having a difficult time finding heartbeats, which for us was torture.  Then she was trying to get the cervix and for some reason decided not to measure it.

We were told to wait in ultrasound and then Dr. Weber arrived.  The last time this happened, Dr. Weber was telling us that we had lost Madison.  Needless to say we were extremely nervous.

He told us good new first:  I was not leaking amniotic fluid.

However, he did not like how my cervix looked.  In fact, because of my cervix he required we move to exam so he take a closer look.

2:50 p.m.

The exam revealed that my cervix was open (U-shaped) already and I was dilated 1 cm.  During the exam, Dr. Weber was actually able to see my water bag, which is a very bad thing.

He decided I needed to be admitted to Mayo-Eau Claire.

At this point, I still did not grasp everything he was saying.  I honestly thought our worst case scenario would involve me having to spend the night and then getting a later start to Watertown than planned, meaning I would have to miss my "Get Pretty" Appointment with Jen the Fabulous.  Boy was I wrong...

4:10 p.m.

Dr. Weber advised us that he had spoken with Mayo-Rochester and the MFM team and the decision was I was to be transported to Rochester.  There was no question ~ I needed to go and our babies were in danger.  I did not grasp this until it was said outloud.  I was in pre-term labor and we were only 23 weeks 1 day.  Way too early.

The ambulance arrived and I was loaded up to travel to Rochester ~ without Adam.  Adam was required to stay behind, get stuff for me to spend the night in Rochester and take care of Gus.  Poor Adam ~ I have no idea how he handled this and managed to stay so calm.  He deserves a medal.

7:30 p.m.

I arrived in Rochester, was admitted and hooked up to more monitors than I thought possible.  The fear was I was going to deliver that night!

10:45 p.m.

Adam arrived and I was able to calm down a little bit.  The babies calmed down and decided to stay put.

Friday, June 21, 2013

We made it through the night.  We are now at 23 weeks, 2 days.  We have met with more doctors - MFMs, OBs, Fellows, Neo-Natalogists; nurses, and team members than you can imagine.  We were forced to have conversations that no parent should have to consider.  And we had to come to terms with potential worst case scenarios.

The doctors eventually felt we had reached a stable enough point and moved me from Labor and Delivery to "Anti-Partum."  Anti-Partum is basically like a waiting area to see how long we can keep the babies in.  This was good news for us.

Saturday, June 22, 2013

Today was supposed to be the girls' first baby shower ~ not happening.  Instead, we celebrating making it through another night and reaching 23 weeks, 3 days.

Unfortunately, a quiet day was not to be had.  Around 2/3 p.m. I started to not feel great and went into labor again.  This time I knew it was labor as I was having painful contractions and they were coming one on top of another.  I was immediately moved back to Labor and Delivery.

Thankfully the doctors were able to stop my labor and we had a quiet night.  I stayed in Labor and Delivery until Sunday Morning.

Sunday, June 23, 2013

Another day ~ yey.  23 weeks, 4 days!  I am in Anti-Partum and my mom came today.  She brought me gorgeous flowers to decorate my room with, because yes it is my room for hopefully 8 more weeks.

Poor Adam has to leave tonight.  I do not want him to leave but he needs to.  He needs to go back to work and it isn't healthy for him to sit in the hospital for 8 weeks worrying about us.  I know he is going to worry wherever he is, but at least he can have sort sort of routine.

Our goal is to be boring!  Boring is good.

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Today we have a doppler ultrasound to test the flow from the umbilical cord between Runt Baby and the placenta.  Turns out Runt is getting less flow but that is because she's so low in my uterus and her cord is more on the edge of the placenta than her sisters.

She's doing well but the doctors are going to watch this meaning we will probably have these ultrasounds 1-2 times per week.  I'm ok with this as it means more opportunities to see our beautiful girls.  And yes, I know I am bias, but they are beautiful!

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

HUGE MILESTONE!  A)  I'm still pregnant!!  and B)  We made it 24 weeks!

There are huge developmental differences between 23 and 24 weeks.  The girls crossed a huge hurdle today.  Truthfully we celebrate every day they stay inside, but even the doctors were celebrating hitting 24 weeks.

I'm going to be in the hospital for hopefully 8 more weeks placing the girls at 32 weeks gestation.  This would provide them with a huge advantage entering the world.  Please keep your fingers crossed and pray for them.

Tomorrow is a huge day as the girls have a sizing ultrasound to see how they have been growing.  We really need them all to be over a pound.  The problem is poor Runt Baby.  Right now she's only 340 grams, she needs to hit 500 grams for the doctors to breathe a little easier.

I have been warned however that the doctors realistically are pulling for 400 grams tomorrow with stready growth...As their mother, I am hoping for 500 grams!  I'll let you know how they measure up!

Every day, the girls are monitored for heartbeats.  If the nurses cannot find the heartbeats for a long enough period of time, differentiating between all three (all three have to be on the monitors at the same time), they bring over a portable ultrasound to confirm heartbeats.  This has happened at least 3/4 times since we've been here already.

I guess the overall theme of this post is that right now, everyone is wonderful.  The babies and I have to be patient and boring.  I will be in Hotel Mayo - Rochester for the duration of our pregnancy.  Please keep your prayers coming for our girls and know we love you all very much.

Love Always,

Adam & daneille

22 Weeks

Keep Baking Babies

First, let me apologize for the delay in this update, I simply do not know where my time goes these days.

Now onto the exciting news.  We've made it 22 weeks and counting.   Today I am 22 weeks and 2 days and the babies just keep getting bigger!

Their weekly fruit update shows their singleton counterparts to be the size of a PAPAYA!  During the fifth month, singleton babies measure between10.5 to 11.8 inches long and weigh between 12.7 to 20.8 ounces

Well, this momma is proud to say her little nuggets are doing fabulously compared to those numbers!

We spent 3 hours at the doctor's yesterday and were able to view our beautiful daughters again.  All have grown and gained weight and love to wiggle around.

Baby A, our Runt Baby, is still the smallest of the three.  But she gained 5 ounces in the last two weeks and now weighs approximately 13 ounces.  Her heartbeat was 147.  Compared to a singleton baby she is in the 21% ~ considering we have three babies growing the doctors are very encouraged by this.  She's still a little small but she's fighting.  She definitely has the least amount of room in there!

Baby B, became our chunker this week, gaining 5-6 ounces!  She now weighs in at just over 1 pound!  Her heartbeat was 150 and she likes to move about.  We had a hard time keeping her away from Baby A ~ what can I say, they just love to cuddle!  Compared to a singleton baby, Baby B is in the 46%.

Baby C was no slacker this week also gaining between 5-6 ounces.  She weighs in at 1 pound.  She has a faster heartbeat at 157 and absolutely LOVES to show off!  It was incredibly difficult to get her to stay still for photos.  Compared to a singleton baby, Baby C is in the 41%.

Overall it was a very encouraging appointment.  The doctor is still in awe of the fact that I am working full time still and would love me to slow down and rest more.  I've agreed to cut back in July  : )

We hope everyone has a wonderful Father's Day weekend!

All our Love,

Adam & daneille

Babies Need A LOT of Things...

And Three Babies Need Even MORE!

There have been a lot of necessary changes and or purchases in the Skibness household lately.  I mean, everyone knows that babies need a lot of things, but when you then multiple those needs by three...WOW!!
We finally registered ~ it took TWO days!  This was mostly because I simply did not have the energy to try and hit both Babies R US and Target in the same day, but still!  The babies need A LOT of stuff!

Chicco Polly High Chair - Elm*  3 car seats
*  3 cribs
*  3 mattresses
*  3 high chairs

*  2 pack n plays

Bumbo Floor Seat - Rose PinkAnd those are just the big things!  I mean there are so many little things like diapers, bottles, bibs, dressers, activity mats, walkers, etc. that the girls need as well!  Thankfully both Adam and I believe in "pre-loved" items (for things that are not safety related ~ cribs, mattresses, car seats are out of bounds) and do not mind if our babies are the second in line, but there is still a ton of stuff!

This week we bit the bullet and purchased a "new to us" vehicle for the babies.  We got a 2010 Suburban, which has car seat harnesses for 4 (Chunky Monkey can come for rides with us) or seating for 8 adults later.  Talk about a HUGE purchase ~ but it was a necessary one...now if I could only learn how to park the dang thing!

We also ordered our cribs (thank you Grandma Jamie and/or Great Grandma Carol).  This was a challenge as we wanted to find something safe, sturdy, not overly expensive and pretty (this is important)!  Thankfully Target came through for us and we found a crib style we both liked and agreed we could handle seeing in triplicate!  Also great was the fact that the crib has matching dressers and a changing table dresser that could be purchased separately.  These have already shipped ~ hopefully Adam's ready to put them together!
Stork Craft Verona 4-in-1 Fixed Side Convertible Crib Quick Information
So the babies now have a safe vehicle to travel in and cribs to sleep in...mattresses still need to be purchased, but hey, we're getting there!

The babies are now 21 weeks ~ can you believe it!  In truth we are probably over a two-thirds the way done with our pregnancy, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that these babies keep baking!

At 21 weeks a singleton baby is the size of a POMEGRANATE.  A singleton baby would measure at approximately 10.5 inches in length and weigh between 12.2 - 12.7 ounces.

We do not have a doctor's appointment this week, so I do not have comparative numbers, however, I like to think our babies are keeping pace and maybe even still surpassing their singleton counterparts.

Keep those fingers crossed that Runt Baby is eating and growing!

OH BOY...We're having GIRLS!!

Pink, Pink and More Pink ~

Identical Baby Girls

Adam and I couldn't be happier to announce that we are having three baby girls!

Yesterday was another marathon day in Rochester, starting with an ultrasound at 8 a.m.  I nervously climbed upon the table and held my breath until the ultrasound tech showed us three strong heartbeats.  Truthfully, after seeing heartbeats I didn't care if saw anything else...however, the doctors needed more.  An inspection of each baby showed no signs of birth defects.  Each baby had a healthy heart, kidneys, brain, etc.

We are currently at 20 weeks, 1 day, which means yesterday we hit the milestone 20 week mark.  Our singleton weekly fruit update is:

BANANAS!!

I am a little confused at how a banana is bigger than a mango, but who am I to judge.

The singleton counterparts on average would be 6.5 inches long and weigh approximately 10.2 - 10.6 ounces.  The babies also now have taste buds and can finally taste what they have me wanting to eat (Mexican ~ lots of Mexican!!  And fruit).

While some moms can say they have definitely felt baby movement, I am still not sure.  However, after our ultrasound yesterday I can assure you, we have one active brood!

Here are your baby updates, complete with adorable profile shots!

Baby A:  Baby A had a strong heartbeat of 141.  She has adorable little feet and is very flexible!

She is however still our Runt Baby.  She is the smallest of the three but if she's like her momma, that doesn't mean much!  She weighed in at 8 ounces, showing a two ounce weight gain from two weeks ago.

While she is growing, her total measurements only place her at 18 weeks, 6 days.  Dr. Borowski wants to monitor her more closely to make sure all is 100 % perfect.  Keep those fingers crossed that Runt Baby eat this week and gains!!

Baby B:  Well this little lady loves to cuddle with both Runt Baby and Baby C, making getting photos of her a little more difficult.  But it's hard to complain when she's so darn cute!

Her heartbeat was 138.

Baby B gained 3 ounces since our last appointment, giving her a new weight of 11 ounces.  (Competitive
Mom Note:  This is more than a singleton baby!!)  Her total measurements place her at 19 weeks, 6 days.  She is doing wonderful!

Baby C:  Last but definitely not least!!  Baby C is the most active of our babies ~ she really did not want to stay still at all!  In fact, at one point she heard Adam talking to her, paused, and then waved at us!  It was beyond words.  Her heartbeat was 147.

She is also our little chunker!  Baby C also gained 3 ounces since our last appointment, giving her a new weight of 11 ounces.  (Again, bigger than the singletons....just saying...)  It's her total measurements that are impressive though!  She is currently measuring at 20 weeks, 2 days!  Maybe she should start sharing with Runt Baby...

As you can see everyone is doing wonderfully and gained weight ~ we gained 8 ounces of baby in the last two weeks.  The doctors were very impressed.

And when I said everyone gained weight, I mean everyone!

Belly Watch 2013 ~ The one and only picture

I currently look like I could deliver tomorrow ~ don't get any bright ideas!!  We need the babies to bake for at least 8 more weeks!!  However, I cannot complain because I am for the most part all baby/belly.  I have the normal aches and pains of a woman who is ready to deliver, which is normal, seeing as how I have gained a significant amount of weight.  But I have to tell you something ~ it is 100% worth it!

Adam and I feel very loved to have been blessed three more wonderful daughters.  We hope you continue this journey with us and welcome your prayers as we enter this next stage of pregnancy.

Thank you.  We love you.

Adam & daneille
